My father never had much time for pleasure reading, but this didn't
stop him from joining numerous book clubs and buying dozens of
cut-rate volumes a year. One of his purchases was a set of four thin
books called The Life Cycle Library for Young People. Sometimes I'd
sneak into the study at the back of our house and read the chapters
about dating.
